Strip seal expansion joints are a type of expansion joint or open bridge joint. Like other joints, strip seal expansion joints are useful as a connecting device between bridge joints, commonly called girders. Strip seal joints have a hollow or gap at the top. The gap refers to the maximum horizontal movement at a bridge joint. The larger the gap, the more the joint can withstand wider horizontal or lateral movement of the bridge.
